In 1977 a graphic designer from Baar, Eugen Hotz, suggested to Zug's carpenters', turners' and coopers' guild, that they donate to Zug town, the sculpture of the Zug carnival figure Gret Schell, the work of Rolf Brem, a Lucerne sculptor. Since 1887, the guild has kept alive the Gret Schell tradition every year, on the Monday afternoon of carnival week, when Gret dances through the old town with her seven companions, the Lölis (jesters). To the musical accompaniment of the guild musicians and the less musical "Gret Schälle Bei" shouted by the children, Gret and the Lölis distribute goodies among the noisy crowd. The figure of Gret Schell on the fountain is bent low by the pannier on her back, in which her drunken husband, adorned with jester's cap, is carried home in the early hours of the morning.
