Ober-Altstadt Well & Fountain

Sodbrunnen

For several years now a modern fountain has stood in the narrow street of the upper old town (Ober Altstadt), modern but with a historical past. A fountain stood on this spot in the 16th century - with a well that was of great importance to the inhabitants of the time.

It was probably one of the older ones of the town, along with the Kolin and the Schwarzmurer fountains. It is not clear why it disappeared from the urban scene, but when the road was opened up during pipe-laying works for a district heating system, workmen came across the brick annulus of the well that was thought to have been on that spot. The Zug architects Bucher Hotz Burkart then erected an elegant steel construction in subdued anthracite tone over the top of the old parts of the well, integrating it into the wall that forms the side of the raised pavement. In order to convey the idea of a well, a stainless steel cylinder was sunk deep into the ground, and this draws the water right up to the top of the cylinder, where it runs down over the sides.
